2017 Ramparts

2017 Ramparts

THE STORY

Ramparts are defensive walls built to protect something of great value. In this case, the walls are glass, and the treasure – a compelling blend of Mourvèdre, Grenache, Counoise and Syrah. This wine was first made in the 2013 vintage, and the 2017 marks the first time that Its Mourvedre is its flag bearer, reflecting the extraordinary growing conditions that enabled extended hang times that Fall. While retaining Its approachability and food friendliness profile, the Mourvèdre concentration here gives this vintage a bit more spiciness and richness on the mid-palate.

VINTAGE NOTES

Red Heaven Vineyard is located in the Red Mountain AVA where diurnal shifts allow for sugar production during the warmer hours of the day, and balancing acidity with the cooler evening air (sometimes a 40 degree drop in temperature from day to night).

Fermented in 63% concrete – 37% stainless
Aged in 76% neutral French oak and 24% new French oak, 50% large format barrels

TASTING NOTES

Aromas of dark fruits and baking spices lead to flavors of blackberry and cherry cola mingled with coffee, leather and coriander notes. Nice acidity and light tannins. This is a slightly lower alcohol offering than previous vintages, but there is a nice ripeness to the 2017 Ramparts.
